How to use this

Filter to your category, prioritise Tier 1, schedule the work via the Citation Planner.

Filter to your category

Universal sources apply to everyone; category-specific ones (Health, Finance, B2B SaaS, etc.) only apply if you're in that category. Don't chase irrelevant directories.

Start with Tier 1

Tier 1 sources move the needle alone. Tier 2 + 3 are accelerants. A typical AEO sprint gets onto 3-5 Tier 1 sources in 90 days.

Schedule the work

Each Tier 1 you land becomes a tracked task in the Citation Planner. The planner organises the effort across a 30/60/90-day plan with owners + tools.

Frequently asked questions

Where does this list come from?
Curated from published AI citation studies (Bain, Profound, Semrush AI Visibility) plus our own scan data across hundreds of audited brands. Tier 1 sources show up in >40% of AI answers in their category; Tier 2 in 15-40%; Tier 3 in <15% but high signal when they do.
Should I try to get on every Tier 1 source?
Only the ones in your category. Universal sources (Wikipedia, Wikidata, Reddit, LinkedIn) apply to everyone. Category-specific ones (Healthline for health, Investopedia for finance, G2 for B2B SaaS) only apply if you're in that category. Don't waste effort on irrelevant directories.
How long to land a Tier 1 source?
Most Tier 1 sources take 60-180 days of consistent work. Wikipedia + major publications (TechCrunch, Forbes, Bloomberg) take longer and have notability thresholds. Directories (G2, Capterra, Crunchbase) are 1-week claims if you meet eligibility. Reviews on Trustpilot etc compound monthly.
What's the difference between Tier 1, 2, 3?
Tier 1: cited by AI in 40%+ of relevant answers — these move the needle alone. Tier 2: solid lift, often paired with Tier 1 for compounding. Tier 3: niche or specialised — useful when you've maxed Tier 1+2 in your category.
Why these engines?
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity are the 'big four' for serious search queries in English. Grok matters more for X-centric topics. DeepSeek matters more for Asia-Pacific. We tag each source with the engines that favour it most based on observed citation patterns.
